You guys – I wrote a book! An advent devotional!

I’m so excited to share the launch of my first published book today:  Unexpected. 25 Daily Advent Devotionals.

Advent Book Details

The book is available via Amazon – paperback and Kindle.

It contains 25 short readings focused on advent. It’s meant to be a quick, daily way to prepare your mind and heart for Christmas as the holiday season nears.

It was written by yours truly, and designed by my talented friend Will Bryan.

All of the proceeds from the book will support my friend Nicole who is doing medical missions with YWAM.

Will and I put our creative minds together and cut our teeth on the publishing process.

Why an Advent Devotional?

Last July, I was studying the life of Jesus and found myself reading the first two chapters of Luke. The story jumped out at me in a new way.

I guess reading the Christmas story in the middle of summer will do that to you.

As I took in the story outside of the traditional holiday hype, I met Zechariah and Elizabeth, Mary and Joseph. They were real people going through unimaginable things.

As I pondered what it was like to encounter such unexpected news, the idea hit me:  write an advent devotional.

Ideas for the book flooded my mind, the details began falling into place.

I love devotional writing because it’s short, succinct and the final product takes less than five minutes of a readers’ day.

Writing an advent devotional was the perfect first book project for me.

Plus, the idea of advent is looking for light amidst the darkness, and if you’ve been keeping up with me, you’ll know this seemed to come at a perfect time.

One of the biggest smiles I’ve ever seen from him – when he realized I dedicated the book to him.

What’s the Devotional About?

Unexpected: 25 Daily Advent Devotionals unpacks four major themes within four weeks:

Magic of the Mundane

God can use what we consider routine or “boring” to transform our lives – He does this all throughout the advent story.

Blessing of Interruptions

What we see as annoying or irritating, God can use for good. Advent teaches us how to think this way.

Power of Adoration

While we may sing and pray now, when we learn to truly adore God, unexpected power comes.

Promises of God

There’s things we know about God – things we’ve been taught are true – but advent holds a special key that reminds us of the promises.

Where else can I get this advent devotional?

I’ve published both the paperback and eBook on Amazon to make it easily accessible to most people! I also have several copies of the book in the Kansas City area – if you want to place an order for a bulk amount, let me know!

And, if you or someone you know owns a local store and you want to sell this (local book from a local author) during the holidays, let me know!

I love to see her in my writing spot.

What’s next?

Most of you guys know I’ve also been working on my memoir. It’s still coming along – it’s very much a work in progress!

I wanted to send a special thanks to my friend Kevin who responded to my memoir blog post and put me in touch with his author friend Dana. She walked me through what self-publishing entails and gave me confidence to try it out for this book!

This experience of self-publishing a devotional on Amazon has taught me a lot and got my wheels turning. We’ll see where this road leads – Mike and I have some big ideas and dreams, too.

Right now, we’re just along for the ride!

And celebrating this major WIN of 2018 – a dream come true.

I published a book!
